Ohio PT licenses expire on a fixed date — January 31 of every even-numbered year — regardless of when you were first licensed. Every Ohio PT is on the same renewal cycle. See the At-a-Glance table above for current fee, CE, and deadline details.

Ohio’s renewal process has two requirements that distinguish it from many other states: all CE must carry an Ohio-issued approval number (Ohio has no CE reciprocity with other states), and the Ohio Jurisprudence Assessment Module (OH JAM) is required at every renewal cycle as part of the mandatory CE hours. There is no grace period — Ohio does not allow late renewal.

CE Requirements for Ohio PT License Renewal

Ohio requires 24 hours of Ohio-approved continuing education per biennial renewal cycle. The first renewal cycle after initial licensure is exempt from all CE requirements — no CE and no JAM are required for your first renewal.

Key CE rules:

  • Ohio approval number required: Every CE course used for Ohio PT renewal must carry an Ohio-issued approval number. Ohio has no CE reciprocity with other states — a course approved in another state does not automatically count for Ohio renewal.
  • Ohio Physical Therapy Association (OPTA): OPTA is the authorized entity that reviews and issues Ohio approval numbers for CE courses. Search the OPTA-approved course list to confirm a course qualifies before completing it.
  • OH JAM — 2 mandatory ethics/jurisprudence hours: 2 of your 24 required CE hours must be completed through the Ohio Jurisprudence Assessment Module. The JAM is completed online and covers Ohio PT laws and rules.
  • No online/self-study cap identified: Ohio does not appear to cap the number of hours from online or self-study sources, but all courses must carry an Ohio approval number regardless of format.
  • CE certificates not submitted with renewal: You do not need to submit CE certificates when you renew. However, retain your CE documentation for at least 2 years in case of audit.
  • First renewal exemption: If this is your first renewal after initial Ohio licensure, CE requirements and the JAM do not apply for that cycle only. Confirm your renewal cycle number with the board if uncertain.

How to Renew Your Ohio PT License

Renewal is processed entirely online through eLicense Ohio. There is no paper renewal option.

  1. Complete your 24 Ohio-approved CE hours before your renewal deadline — including the OH JAM (2 hours ethics/jurisprudence)
  2. Log in to your eLicense Ohio account
  3. Navigate to your PT license renewal application
  4. Attest to your CE completion — certificates are not submitted but must be retained for 2 years
  5. Confirm your public contact address and employment phone number are current — the board requires this to be up to date to process renewal
  6. Pay the renewal fee — $70 plus $3.50 eLicense processing fee — by credit or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover)
  7. Submit your renewal
Important: Ohio does not allow late renewal. If your license expires on January 31 without renewal, you cannot practice and cannot renew late. You must submit a Reinstatement Application ($100 fee) to return to active status. Do not let your license expire.

What Happens If Your Ohio PT License Expires

Ohio is strict: you cannot renew late, and you cannot practice on an expired license. If your license expires on January 31 without renewal, your only path back to active practice is a formal Reinstatement Application with a $100 reinstatement fee. Contact the OTPTAT Board directly to begin the reinstatement process.

PT Compact and Ohio License Renewal

Ohio is a PT Compact member state. If you hold compact privileges in other member states, renewal works differently from your Ohio home state license renewal:

  • Compact privileges depend on your Ohio license remaining active and in good standing. If your Ohio license lapses, compact privileges in other states are affected — keep your Ohio license current.
  • Compact privileges do not automatically renew when you renew your Ohio license. They must be renewed separately through the PT Compact Commission.
  • Out-of-state PTs using a compact privilege to practice in Ohio must comply with Ohio’s OH JAM requirement — this applies upon initial privilege acquisition and at subsequent renewals.
  • Manage your compact privileges proactively. Do not assume your Ohio renewal covers your compact status in other states.

For compact privilege details, see the OTPTAT Board’s PT Compact page and the PT Compact Commission directly.

Practical Notes for Ohio PT License Renewal

From the field: These notes reflect practical considerations beyond the official requirements — things that affect your renewal timeline and planning as a working PT.
  • January 31 of even years — mark this date permanently. Unlike states with birthday-based expiration, every Ohio PT is on the same fixed date. This makes it easy to remember, but it also means everyone renews at the same time — don’t wait until the last week.
  • Ohio’s CE rules are state-specific and strict. Every CE course must carry an Ohio approval number. If you completed CE through APTA or another national provider, verify that specific courses have Ohio approval numbers before counting them toward your renewal. National approval does not equal Ohio approval.
  • Complete the JAM early. The OH JAM is a mandatory 2-hour module required every renewal cycle. It’s online and manageable, but don’t leave it until the week before January 31 along with everyone else renewing simultaneously.
  • There is no grace period — at all. Ohio’s policy is unusually strict. Most states allow late renewal with a penalty fee. Ohio does not. January 31 is a hard deadline.
  • Travel PTs: plan around your expiration date. If your Ohio license expires January 31 mid-assignment, you need to renew before that date — not when convenient. Build this into your assignment contract planning.
  • Keep your CE records for 2 years. You do not submit CE documentation at renewal, but the board can audit you. Keep certificates organized and accessible.
  • Compact privileges require separate renewal action. Renewing your Ohio license does not automatically renew compact privileges in other states. Take separate action through the PT Compact Commission.
