New York Physical Therapist Licenses are renewed on a triennial basis — every three years. The registration expires on the last day of your birth month in your renewal year. Unlike a fixed-date expiration system, each licensee’s renewal date is individual, so your specific deadline depends on your birth month and your initial licensure date rather than a single statewide deadline.
New York distinguishes between the license itself — which is permanent unless revoked or suspended — and the registration, which is the active authorization to practice. Both must be current to practice legally. Renewing your registration every three years is what keeps your ability to practice active. A valid license with an expired registration means you cannot legally practice physical therapy in New York.
What Makes New York Different for Renewal
- License and registration are separate. Your PT license is permanent. Your registration expires every three years. Missing a registration renewal does not eliminate your license — but it does prohibit practice until the registration is renewed or restored.
- Birth-month expiration. Your registration expires on the last day of your birth month, triannually. This means renewal dates vary by individual, not by a single statewide calendar.
- No mandatory CE topics. New York does not require CE in specific mandatory subject areas such as ethics, infection control, or jurisprudence. All 36 hours are elective within NYSED-approved subject areas related to PT practice.
- No self-study cap. Per 8 NYCRR §77.10, self-study is an approved learning activity with no numerical cap. All 36 required hours may be completed through self-study or online courses from NYSED-approved sponsors.
- First-registration CE exemption for new examination licensees. PTs first licensed in New York by examination are exempt from CE requirements for the entire triennial registration period in which they were first licensed. CE requirements begin with the second registration period. Note: this exemption applies to applicants licensed by examination in New York — it does not apply to endorsement applicants.
Continuing Education Requirements for New York PT Renewal
Per 8 NYCRR §77.10, licensed physical therapists must complete 36 contact hours of approved continuing education during each three-year registration renewal period. One contact hour equals at least 50 minutes of instruction. The full 36 hours must be from NYSED-approved sponsors. There are no mandatory topic requirements — all hours are elective within subjects related to physical therapy practice.
Approved CE formats
Per the NYSED regulations, acceptable CE learning activities include formal courses offered by approved sponsors, self-study programs (audio, audio-visual, written, and online content), teaching presentations, authoring peer-reviewed publications, and passing the NYSED-administered “Test Your Knowledge of Law and Practice” examination (which earns 2 CE hours for a passing score). There is no cap on self-study or online hours — 100% of the 36-hour requirement may be met through self-study or online formats from approved sponsors.
Approved CE sponsors
NYSED deems approved as CE sponsors: national physical therapy organizations (including APTA), New York State PT organizations, national boards of physical therapy, accredited educational institutions, and hospitals and health facilities under New York Public Health Law. Sponsors not automatically deemed approved may apply to NYSED for sponsor approval.
CE record retention
You must retain CE certificates and documentation for at least 6 years (two full registration cycles) in the event of an audit. NYSED does not collect CE documentation at renewal but may audit licensees.
Pro-rated CE for transitional and phase-in situations
For registration periods that do not span a full three years — such as the initial phase-in period — CE hours are pro-rated at one-half contact hour per month for the applicable period. Newly licensed PTs are fully exempt from CE for their first registration period (see below).
How to Renew Your New York Physical Therapist License
- Complete your 36 CE contact hours from NYSED-approved sponsors before your registration expiration date (last day of your birth month in your renewal year)
- Log in to the NYSED eServices portal using your credentials
- Complete the online registration renewal application
- Attest to completion of required CE hours (retain certificates for 6 years in case of audit — do not submit them at renewal)
- Pay the $224 renewal fee by credit card online, or by check/money order if submitting by mail
- Submit and retain confirmation of your renewed registration
Mail renewal is available but online renewal is the primary method. For questions about your renewal status or lapsed registration, contact the Physical Therapy Unit at 518-474-3817 ext. 270 or ptbd@nysed.gov.
PT Compact and New York Renewal
New York is not a member of the Physical Therapy Licensure Compact. The compact’s renewal implications — where completing CE in your home state satisfies CE requirements across all compact-member practice states — do not apply to New York in either direction. New York cannot serve as a home state for compact privilege purposes, and compact privileges from other member states do not extend to New York practice. PTs holding a New York license must renew that license directly with NYSED on the standard triennial cycle regardless of compact membership in any other state.
Practical Notes for New York PT License Renewal
- Your renewal deadline is your birth month — not a fixed calendar date. Every New York PT has an individual expiration date tied to their birth month. Do not rely on remembering a statewide renewal season. Note your specific expiration date and set reminders well in advance.
- No grace period published — treat your expiration date as a hard deadline. NYSED does not publish a formal grace period after registration expiration. Practicing with an expired registration is not permitted. Renew before your expiration date, not after.
- New examination licensees: CE is not required for your first renewal period. If you were licensed in New York by examination, you are fully exempt from CE requirements for your first triennial registration period. CE begins with your second registration period. This exemption does not apply to endorsement applicants — if you obtained your New York license through endorsement, CE applies from your first renewal.
- No self-study cap makes flexible CE planning straightforward. New York allows all 36 hours to be completed online or through self-study, as long as the provider is NYSED-approved. This is one of the more CE-flexible states for PTs who prefer online formats.
- Keep CE records for 6 years. Do not discard CE certificates after renewal. NYSED may audit compliance at any time, and records must be retained for two full registration cycles (6 years).
- Travel PTs: plan around your birth-month deadline. If your New York registration expires mid-assignment, you need to renew before the expiration date. Unlike some states, there is no published window to continue practicing post-expiration while renewal processes.
- Lapsed registration requires restoration — contact NYSED directly. If your registration has lapsed, NYSED handles restoration individually depending on how long the registration has been expired. There is no published standard late fee schedule. Contact the Physical Therapy Unit before attempting to practice.
