New Jersey OT licenses expire on September 30 of odd-numbered years — a fixed profession-wide date that applies to all licensees, regardless of when they were originally licensed. Renewal is biennial at $160, submitted online through the MyLicense portal. The Council sends renewal notices by mail and email approximately 60 days before the expiration date.

One of New Jersey’s most notable features is that the state currently requires no continuing education for OT license renewal. The New Jersey OT practice act does not contain a CE mandate, making it one of only a handful of states where licensees can renew without documenting any CE hours. This may change: pending legislation (S3931) would establish CE requirements for New Jersey OT licensees, described as a potential step toward OT Compact participation. Monitor this legislation if you hold a New Jersey license.

New Jersey has a strict 30-day post-expiration window. If you do not renew within 30 days of September 30, your license is automatically suspended without a hearing. Practicing with a suspended license is subject to action under New Jersey law even if you have not received notice of the suspension.

OT Compact — New Jersey Status

New Jersey is not a member of the OT Compact as of June 2026. There are no compact renewal implications for New Jersey licensees. Every OT must maintain a full individual New Jersey license. Monitor S3931 and any subsequent compact legislation at njleg.state.nj.us.

Continuing Education — What You Need to Know

New Jersey is one of the few states that currently does not require occupational therapists to complete continuing education hours for license renewal. The New Jersey OT practice act (N.J.A.C. 13:44K) does not contain a CE mandate, and the Occupational Therapy Advisory Council has noted that the practice act does not require CE. Renewal requires only submission of the renewal application and payment of the $160 fee.

This may change. Senate Bill S3931, which was moving through the New Jersey Legislature in 2025, would establish continuing competence and professional development requirements for NJ OT licensees as a condition of renewal. During a May 2025 Senate Commerce Committee hearing, it was noted that adding CE requirements could be an initial step toward New Jersey joining the OT Compact. If enacted, renewal requirements would change significantly. Verify current requirements before each renewal period at njconsumeraffairs.gov/ot.

Renewal Timeline and Process

All New Jersey OT licenses expire on September 30 of odd-numbered years. The renewal window opens 90 days before expiration, and the Council sends renewal notices approximately 60 days before the deadline. Failing to receive this notice does not exempt you from renewal obligations — it is your responsibility to renew on time.

Key Dates

  • ~July 1 (odd years): Renewal notices sent by Council (approximately 60 days before expiration)
  • September 30 (odd years): License expiration deadline — renewal must be submitted by this date
  • October 30 (odd years): End of 30-day grace period — last day to renew with $40 late fee while license remains valid
  • After October 30: License automatically suspended without hearing — reinstatement required with $80 fee plus renewal fee

Inactive Status

New Jersey allows licensees to renew in inactive status if they are not currently practicing. A licensee who renews as inactive may not engage in the practice of occupational therapy or hold themselves out as eligible to practice in New Jersey until the license is returned to active status. If you have been on inactive status for five or more years, you must demonstrate maintained competency — either through coursework completed during the inactive period or through continuous active practice of OT in another jurisdiction — before returning to active status. Failure to demonstrate competency may result in additional examination or requirements. Per N.J.A.C. 13:44K-8.6.

How to Renew

  1. Watch for the renewal notice from the Council approximately 60 days before September 30 — sent to your mailing and email address on file
  2. Keep your mailing and email address current with the Council — failure to receive the notice does not exempt you from renewal obligations
  3. Log in to the MyLicense portal through njconsumeraffairs.gov/ot and complete the renewal application
  4. Pay the $160 renewal fee by credit or debit card (Visa, MC, Amex, or Discover)
  5. Submit before September 30 to avoid a late fee
Practical Notes:
  • All NJ OT licenses expire September 30 of odd years — same day, every cycle. Unlike birthday-based systems, you share an expiration date with every other NJ OT. Set a calendar reminder well in advance.
  • No CE required — for now. New Jersey currently has no CE requirement for OT renewal. However, S3931 was moving through the legislature in 2025 and would change this. Check njconsumeraffairs.gov/ot before each renewal period to confirm current requirements.
  • The 30-day grace period is your safety net — not your plan. The license remains valid during the 30-day window (through October 30), but you’ll owe a $40 late fee. After October 30, automatic suspension and the $80 reinstatement fee kick in, and you must stop practicing immediately.
  • Keep your address current. The Council cannot exempt you from late fees or suspension penalties because you didn’t receive a renewal notice if your address on file was outdated.
  • Inactive status requires a formal election. If you choose inactive renewal, you cannot practice at all — and returning to active status after 5+ years of inactivity requires demonstrating maintained competency. Plan accordingly if you anticipate leaving practice.

A licensee who fails to renew within 30 days of the September 30 expiration date has their license automatically suspended without a hearing. Practicing with a suspended license is unauthorized practice of occupational therapy, subject to action under N.J.S.A. 45:1-14 et seq., even if the licensee has not received notice of the suspension. Reinstatement requires a formal application and payment of an $80 reinstatement fee plus the renewal fee. Source: N.J.A.C. 13:44K (Official NJ Regulation)
