Texas GMRT certificates renew on a biennial (every two years) cycle, expiring on either February 28 or August 31 — fixed dates set by the Texas Board of Medical Radiologic Technology, not tied to your birthday or application date. According to TBMRT, renewal postcards are mailed at least 60 days before expiration and online renewal opens 60–90 days before your expiration date. There is no grace period — penalty fees begin immediately after your expiration date. Renew before your expiration date.

Texas GMRT Renewal Fees

As of February 2026, the biennial renewal fee for a General Medical Radiologic Technologist certificate is $94 total, broken down as follows per TBMRT:

  • Agency fee: $64
  • National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) fee: $21
  • Physician Health Program (PHP) fee: $7
  • Office of Patient Protection (OPP) fee: $2

These fees are required by state law and are non-refundable. An additional convenience fee may apply for credit card payments — no additional fee for electronic check payments. Paper renewal incurs an additional $50 processing fee when online renewal is available.

Late Renewal and Penalties

Important: Texas has no grace period for GMRT renewal. Penalty fees begin immediately after your expiration date. Do not let your license expire.

According to TBMRT, the late renewal penalty structure is:

  • Immediately after expiration: Penalty fee equal to 50% of the renewal fee is added
  • After 90 days expired: Penalty fee increases to equal a full renewal fee
  • After 1 year expired: License is automatically cancelled

If your license has expired, contact TBMRT directly to determine your reinstatement options before taking any action. Do not assume you can simply pay the penalty and renew online — verify the current process with TBMRT based on how long your license has been expired.

CE Requirements for Texas GMRT Renewal

General Medical Radiologic Technologists must complete a minimum of 24 CE hours every 24 months (based on the biennial registration period, not the calendar year) as a prerequisite for renewal. Requirements are established under Board rule 186.19.

CE structure:

  • At least 12 of 24 hours must be formal Category A or A-plus CE evaluated by an ARRT-recognized Continuing Education Evaluation Mechanism (RCEEM or RCEEM-plus)
  • No more than 12 hours may be self-study or informal CE
  • At least 50% of hours must be directly related to ionizing radiation and diagnostic imaging
  • Human trafficking prevention course is required every renewal period — approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC)

ARRT cardholders:

An MRT who holds a current and active ARRT registration or credential card indicating good standing and not on probation satisfies the CE requirement for renewal of the general certificate — except for the required human trafficking prevention course. The human trafficking course must be completed regardless of ARRT status. ARRT CE hours must have been completed during the MRT’s biennial renewal period and must meet or exceed current Texas requirements.

Excess CE credits:

Up to 48 excess CE hours may be carried forward from one renewal period and applied to the next — except for the human trafficking prevention course, which must be completed each renewal period. Excess credits may not be carried forward more than 2 years.

Practical Notes for Texas GMRT Renewal

From the field: These notes reflect practical considerations for working RTs renewing a Texas GMRT certificate.
  • No grace period — this is serious. Texas is one of the strictest states on late renewal. The penalty begins immediately after expiration and escalates quickly. Mark your February 28 or August 31 expiration date in your calendar well in advance and renew as soon as the window opens.
  • Know whether your expiration is February or August. Texas GMRT certificates expire on one of two fixed dates per year. Log into your My TMB account to confirm your specific expiration date — don’t guess.
  • ARRT card covers most CE — but not the human trafficking course. If your ARRT certification is current and active, it satisfies most of Texas’s CE requirement. But you still must complete the HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention course every renewal period. This is the one CE requirement ARRT cannot satisfy for you.
  • Travel RTs: Texas expiration dates create mid-assignment risk. Unlike birthday-based expiration systems, Texas’s fixed February/August dates mean your license could expire mid-assignment depending on when you were licensed. Track your expiration date and don’t rely on the postcard arriving if you’ve moved.
  • Don’t rely on the renewal postcard. TBMRT mails renewal postcards at least 60 days before expiration, but if your mailing address is not current with the board, you may not receive it. The expiration date does not change. Update your address in My TMB and track your own renewal deadline.
  • Paper renewal costs an extra $50. If online renewal is available, use it. The $50 additional processing fee for paper renewal is avoidable.
