Washington DC Licensing Overview
The District of Columbia requires anyone practicing physical therapy in DC to hold a license issued by the Board of Physical Therapy, within DC Health. Distinct application checklists exist for examination, endorsement, and re-examination — DC’s own regulations also separately reference “reciprocity and endorsement” in the same statutory subchapter, so applicants relocating from another jurisdiction should confirm with the Board which specific pathway applies to their situation.
DC eliminated paper applications entirely in 2021 — every initial application, renewal, reinstatement, and reactivation now goes through DC Health’s Enterprise Online Licensing System.
PT Compact
DC has been an active member of the PT Compact since November 6, 2023. A therapist holding an active license in another compact member state can obtain a compact privilege to practice in DC instead of applying for a full DC license — but DC is one of the states that requires the jurisdiction-specific jurisprudence exam even for compact privilege holders, not just full license applicants. The DC Jurisprudence Exam must be completed within 30 days after the compact privilege is issued.
Requirements
- Graduation from a professional physical therapy education program accredited by an agency recognized by the Board (CAPTE accredits most U.S. programs); foreign-educated applicants must complete an FCCPT Type 1 credentials evaluation
- Passage of the NPTE, for the examination pathway
- Passage of the DC Jurisprudence Examination — 50 computer-based multiple-choice questions (40 scored), a 60-minute time limit, and a required scaled score of 600, costing $75 total ($50 to FSBPT, $25 to Prometric); required of all applicants and of compact privilege applicants
- A fingerprint-based Criminal Background Check, with a separate $50.00 fee
- If you lack a Social Security Number, a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury plus alternative lawful status documentation (such as a Certificate of Citizenship, Resident Alien Card, valid foreign passport with visa, or DHS work permit)
How to Apply
- Determine your pathway — examination, endorsement, or re-examination — and confirm with the Board whether DC’s separate reciprocity provisions apply to your situation
- Submit your online application through DC Health’s Enterprise Online Licensing System — paper applications are not accepted
- Register with FSBPT for the NPTE (examination pathway) and pass it
- Register for and pass the DC Jurisprudence Examination through FSBPT
- Complete your fingerprint-based Criminal Background Check and pay the $50.00 fee
- Upload all required supporting documentation to your application
- Pay the $264.00 application and license fee online, and await your license
Practical Notes: Don’t confuse the NPTE with DC’s own jurisprudence exam — both are required, both go through FSBPT, but they’re separate exams with separate registrations. If you’re applying for a PT Compact privilege in DC rather than a full license, don’t assume the jurisprudence exam is waived — DC requires it for compact applicants too, with a 30-day completion window after your privilege is issued.

Disclaimer: This page is provided for informational purposes and reflects data verified against official DC government sources as of the Last Verified date above. Processing time and whether DC’s “reciprocity” provisions are truly distinct from “endorsement” in practice were not fully independently confirmed this session. 2026-07-10: Page created following direct verification against official DC government sources. Confirmed the jurisprudence exam requirement directly via an official Board Candidate Handbook citation and independently via ptcompact.org’s own page, which specifically describes DC’s jurisprudence exam requirement for compact privilege applicants. Corrected the regulation citation from DCMR Chapter 41 (general administrative procedures) to Chapter 67, the actual profession-specific physical therapy chapter.
2026-07-10: Editorial review round directly fetched the full Board Candidate Handbook for the Jurisprudence Examination, confirming the exam requirement, format, and fee structure verbatim rather than relying on secondhand citations. Simplified the credential name, removed an unverified dry needling claim, softened the reciprocity/endorsement pathway language, and corrected initial-application payment methods to remove a card-type claim that was only confirmed for renewal.
