Nevada OT licenses expire 2 years from the date of initial issuance — not on a fixed calendar date and not on the licensee’s birthday. This means each licensee’s renewal date is individual to when their license was originally issued. The Board sends renewal notices, but licensees are responsible for renewing on time regardless of whether a notice is received.

Renewals are completed online through the NVBOT portal. Nevada allows a 30-day late renewal window after the expiration date, with a $125 late fee. After that 30-day window closes, the Board will not accept a renewal application — the licensee must instead go through the formal reinstatement process under NAC 640A.055.

Nevada requires 24 hours of continuing education per biennial cycle. There are no mandatory topic requirements, but the jurisprudence exam must be passed at least once every 5 years throughout licensure. CE documentation must be submitted to the Board along with the renewal application — a list of completed courses and activities is required per NAC 640A.070(6). The Board conducts random audits.

Nevada OT Continuing Education Requirements

Hours Required

Nevada requires a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education per biennial renewal cycle per NAC 640A.070(1). A licensee who completes more than 24 hours in a cycle may carry over a maximum of 10 excess hours toward the next cycle’s requirement.

Exception for new graduates: A licensee who obtains their standard license within 12 months of graduating from their accredited OT program is required to obtain only 12 hours of CE to renew the license for the first time per NAC 640A.070(5).

Recurring Jurisprudence Exam Requirement

In addition to continuing education hours, Nevada licensees must achieve a passing score on the Nevada Occupational Therapy Jurisprudence Examination at least once every 5 years per NAC 640A.070(3). The jurisprudence exam counts as one qualifying CE activity for the renewal cycle in which it is passed — it cannot be counted more than once per biennial cycle.

Qualifying CE Activities and Category Limits

Nevada defines qualifying continuing education broadly under NAC 640A.090. Subject matter must relate to occupational therapy roles, responsibilities, knowledge, performance skills, or ethical reasoning. The following activity types qualify, with per-cycle limits where applicable:

  • Live presentations (workshops, seminars, conferences, in-service programs): No specific cap; must be followed by certificate of completion
  • Self-study with formal assessment (online courses, self-paced clinical courses): No specific cap; must include formal assessment and certificate of completion
  • Academic coursework (on-site or distance learning): No specific cap; must submit transcript showing successful completion
  • Fieldwork supervision: Maximum 4 hours per cycle for Level I fieldwork supervision; maximum 18 hours per cycle for Level II fieldwork supervision
  • Publications: Peer-reviewed book, chapter, or article on OT topics — maximum 12 hours per renewal cycle
  • Teaching: Teaching an educational course outside normal employment scope — no specific cap; documentation required
  • Professional organization participation: Official board or committee meetings of OT organizations — maximum 6 hours per biennial cycle
  • Specialty certification: Achievement of a Board-approved OT specialty certification — maximum 5 hours per renewal cycle in which it is achieved

For activities not listed in NAC 640A.090, licensees may submit a written request to the Board for credit approval by the applicable renewal deadline per NAC 640A.080.

CE Documentation Requirements

Per NAC 640A.070(6), licensees must submit to the Board a list of all courses and activities completed to satisfy the CE requirement. This list must be submitted at the time the renewal application is submitted. CE records (certificates of completion, transcripts, and other documentation) must be retained — the Board conducts random audits per NAC 640A.070(7). Records should be retained for at least 4 years per Board guidance.

How to Renew Your Nevada OT License

  1. Log into the NVBOT License Renewal portal.
  2. Complete the online renewal application. All sections are mandatory; incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  3. Submit your list of CE courses and activities completed during the renewal cycle per NAC 640A.070(6).
  4. Pay the $250 renewal fee by personal check, money order, cashier’s check, or credit card.
  5. Do not use the back button during the renewal process — use the Exit button to safely leave if needed.

If your renewal is submitted after the expiration date but within 30 days, include the $125 late fee. If more than 30 days have passed since expiration, do not attempt to renew — contact the Board about reinstatement.

Lapsed License — Reinstatement and New Applicant Rules

Within 5 years of expiration (NAC 640A.055): A standard license that has expired may be reinstated if:

  • The application is made within 5 years of the expiration date;
  • The applicant provides proof of current NBCOT certification;
  • The applicant provides proof of 24 hours of CE completed within the 2-year period immediately preceding the reinstatement request; and
  • The applicant has achieved a passing score on the Nevada OT Jurisprudence Examination within the year immediately preceding the reinstatement request.

The reinstatement fee is $250 per NAC 640A.160.

5 years or more after expiration (NAC 640A.060): If the standard license has been expired for 5 years or more, the person must apply as a new applicant, meeting all current initial licensure requirements.

Administrative fines for practicing on an expired license (NAC 640A.170): If you practice occupational therapy after your license has expired, the Board will assess an administrative fine. For periods of expiration of 30 days or less, the fine is not less than $50. For periods greater than 30 days, the fine is not less than $200 and may reach $5,000. The Board may waive the fine for a first offense or where good cause is demonstrated.

Looking for CE courses approved for Nevada OT renewal? Nevada does not maintain a single pre-approved provider list. Qualifying activities are defined in NAC 640A.090 and include live presentations, self-study with formal assessment, academic courses, fieldwork supervision, publications, teaching, professional organization participation, and specialty certifications. For activities not clearly covered by NAC 640A.090, you may submit a written request for Board approval before your renewal deadline.

OT Compact and Nevada License Renewal

Nevada is an OT Compact member per Assembly Bill 343. For Nevada-licensed OTs holding compact privileges in other member states, maintaining an active, unencumbered Nevada home state license is essential — an expired Nevada license will affect your compact privileges in other states. Compact privilege maintenance also depends on OT Compact Commission rules, which should be verified at otcompact.gov.

For OTs practicing in Nevada under compact privileges from another home state, renewal obligations are governed by your home state. Contact the Nevada Board at board@nvot.org or 775-746-4101 to verify current compact renewal procedures.

Practical Renewal Notes
  • Your renewal date is unique to you. Nevada licenses expire 2 years from the date they were originally issued — not on a fixed calendar date. Check your license for your specific expiration date.
  • 30-day late window — not a grace period. The Board will not accept a renewal submitted more than 30 days after expiration. After 30 days, you must reinstate, not renew.
  • Submit CE list with your renewal. Unlike some states, Nevada requires you to submit a list of completed CE activities at the time of renewal, not just certify completion. Have your documentation ready.
  • Jurisprudence exam every 5 years. Track when you last passed the jurisprudence exam — you must pass it again if it has been 5 years or more before renewal.
  • Retain CE records for 4 years. The Board conducts random audits. Keep all certificates, transcripts, and documentation for at least 4 years.
  • Carry-over up to 10 hours. If you exceed 24 CE hours in a cycle, up to 10 extra hours can apply to your next renewal cycle — but you must still submit them at the time of the current renewal.

If your license expires, you must stop practicing and stop representing yourself as an OT. Within 30 days after expiration, you may submit a late renewal with the $125 late fee. After 30 days, you must formally reinstate — the Board will not accept a renewal. Reinstatement within 5 years requires proof of current NBCOT certification, 24 CE hours completed in the preceding 2 years, and a passing jurisprudence exam within the preceding year. Does Nevada require a jurisprudence exam at every renewal?

Not at every renewal — but at least once every 5 years. NAC 640A.070(3) requires licensees to achieve a passing score on the Nevada OT Jurisprudence Examination at least once every 5 years. The exam counts as a qualifying CE activity for the cycle in which it is passed and is administered online through the Board’s portal. If reinstatement is required, a passing jurisprudence exam within the year preceding reinstatement is required. Source: NAC 640A.070(3)
