Texas OT licenses renew every two years and expire at the end of the licensee’s birth month — a birthday-based system, not a fixed-date cycle like Ohio or Pennsylvania. The renewal fee is $248 for an active license. Renewal can be completed online through the ECPTOTE Online Licensing System or by mailing a paper renewal form.

Texas has two mandatory renewal requirements beyond the 24 CE hours: every licensee must complete a Human Trafficking Prevention training course approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), and every licensee must pass the Texas OT Renewal Jurisprudence Exam. Both must be completed before the license expires. At least one HHSC-approved human trafficking course is available at no charge.

Texas permits late renewal for licenses expired less than one year, with increasing late fees depending on how long the license has been expired. However, practice is prohibited the moment a license expires — there is no grace period for continued practice. Licenses expired one year or more cannot be renewed and require restoration under TAC §370.3.

OT Compact and Texas License Renewal

Texas is not a member of the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact. There are no compact renewal implications for Texas OT licensees. Standard Texas renewal procedures apply to all licensees regardless of whether they hold compact privileges in other states.

If you hold an OT Compact home-state license in another state and use a compact privilege to practice in Texas — note that Texas does not currently issue or recognize compact privileges, so this scenario does not apply at this time. Monitor compact status at otcompact.gov.

Continuing Education Requirements for Renewal

Texas requires 24 contact hours of CE per renewal period. All CE must meet the requirements in TAC Chapter 367. The renewal period runs from the start of the license period through the end of the birth month in which the license expires.

Mandatory Requirements

  • HHSC-Approved Human Trafficking Prevention Training: Required every renewal period — not a one-time requirement. Must be a course specifically approved by HHSC pursuant to HB 2059. Counts for up to 2 contact hours of CE credit (pre-approved). AOTA- or TOTA-approved human trafficking courses do not satisfy this requirement unless also HHSC-approved. At least one HHSC-approved course is available at no charge. See the ECPTOTE CE page for the link to the HHSC approved course list.
  • Renewal Jurisprudence Exam: Required at every renewal. Accessed through the ECPTOTE Online Licensing System during the renewal process. Open book. If you experience technical issues, take it on a smartphone on mobile data (not Wi-Fi) — this resolves many browser-related exam issues per the Board’s own guidance.

Pre-Approved CE Sources

Activities approved or offered by AOTA or TOTA are pre-approved for CE credit. For all other activities, licensees are responsible for verifying the activity meets Chapter 367 requirements. Note that 1 AOTA CEU equals 1 contact hour (not 0.1).

No Maximum for Major CE Categories

There is no maximum number of contact hours for in-service educational programs, training programs, institutes, seminars, workshops, internet-based courses, conference sessions, and home-study courses with specified learning objectives. Some other categories under Chapter 367 do have limits — consult the full chapter for specifics.

CE Documentation Retention

CE documentation must be retained for 4 years from the end of the expiration month of the corresponding renewal period. For late renewals or restorations, retain for 4 years from the end of the month when the late renewal or restoration was completed. You are solely responsible for maintaining this documentation. How to Renew Your Texas OT License

  1. Complete your 24 CE contact hours during the renewal period, including at least one HHSC-approved Human Trafficking Prevention training course.
  2. Pass the Texas OT Renewal Jurisprudence Exam. This is completed through the ECPTOTE Online Licensing System as part of the renewal process — take it before the system asks for payment.
  3. Log in to the ECPTOTE Online Licensing System to complete the renewal. Submit your CE/CC form, complete the jurisprudence exam, and then complete the payment portion.
  4. Pay the $248 active renewal fee by credit card or electronic check (online) or by check/money order (paper). Make checks payable to ECPTOTE.
  5. Submit fingerprints if you have not previously satisfied the Board’s fingerprinting requirement. Renewal will not be processed until this requirement is met.
  6. After renewal is processed, verify your renewal on the Board’s license verification page. You may continue practicing once your license shows as current there.

Renew early — up to 3 months before expiration — to avoid last-minute delays. Submit all required items before the expiration date to avoid late fees.

What Happens If Your Texas OT License Expires?

Texas has a clear tiered system for expired licenses. The moment your license expires, you may not practice occupational therapy in Texas. Here is what applies at each stage:

  • Expired less than 90 days: Late renewal is available. Pay the $248 renewal fee plus a late fee of $124 (half the renewal fee), totaling $372. All other renewal requirements apply.
  • Expired 90 days to less than 1 year: Late renewal is still available. Pay the $248 renewal fee plus a late fee of $248 (equal to the full renewal fee), totaling $496. All other renewal requirements apply.
  • Expired 1 year or more: Late renewal is no longer available. You must restore your license under TAC §370.3. Contact the Board for current restoration requirements and fees. See the ECPTOTE Restoration page.

In all cases, a late renewal does not change your expiration date — your next renewal will still be due at the end of the same birth month two years later. Source: ECPTOTE Renew a License

Practical Notes

From the field: These notes reflect practical considerations beyond the official requirements — things that affect your renewal timeline and planning.
  • Your deadline is your birth month — not a fixed date. Texas uses a birthday-based expiration system, unlike some states that use a fixed-date cycle. Your license expires at the end of your birth month every two years. If your birth month is July, your license expires July 31. Set a recurring calendar reminder for at least 30 days before your birth month ends.
  • The jurisprudence exam is part of the online renewal process. It is not a separate step you complete in advance — it is accessed through the renewal portal. Complete it before submitting payment. The Board recommends using a smartphone on mobile data if you experience browser issues.
  • Complete the human trafficking training early in the renewal period. The Board recommends not waiting until the last minute. Some HHSC-approved courses have limited availability, and the free course option can fill up or change. Confirm HHSC approval before enrolling.
  • Late renewal does not reset your expiration date. If you renew late, your next renewal is still due at the end of the same birth month — it does not extend from the date you renewed. This can create a short renewal cycle if you renew late in the second year.
  • Fingerprinting at renewal applies to some licensees. If you were fingerprinted for initial licensure under the current requirement (effective January 1, 2019), you do not need to be fingerprinted again. If you have not yet met the fingerprinting requirement, the renewal will not be processed until you do.
  • Renew up to 3 months early. Texas allows early renewal up to 3 months before expiration. Taking advantage of this window gives you buffer time if technical issues arise with the online system or the jurisprudence exam.
