Renewal Overview
Idaho PT licenses renew on a biennial basis effective October 14, 2025, following a transition from the prior annual renewal system. Licenses expire on the licensee’s birthday, making the renewal date personal rather than a statewide fixed deadline. Renewal is completed online through the DOPL Online Renewal System — unlike initial applications, which are paper-based.
There is no grace period. Practicing on an expired license is unlawful in Idaho, and the reinstatement fee of $35 applies to any lapsed license and cannot be waived under Idaho Code §67-2614. DOPL also requires continuing education documentation or other materials to be submitted before reinstatement depending on how long the license has lapsed.
Idaho uses an attestation and audit model for CE — licensees certify compliance during renewal but do not upload certificates unless selected for a Board audit. CE documentation must be retained for two years and provided to the Board upon request.
Continuing Education Requirements
Under IDAPA 24.13.01 §100.02.a, Idaho requires 32 contact hours of continuing education every two years. One contact hour equals one hour of instruction. The Board does not specify mandatory topic areas — CE must be germane to the practice of physical therapy and conducted by individuals with appropriate specialized education and experience per §100.02.c. The Board does not pre-approve CE activities or providers.
Approved activity types under the CE Guidance Document include workshops, conferences, symposiums, live interactive electronically transmitted conferences, home study courses, academic coursework, and online courses. There is no explicit cap on online or home study hours — 100% of CE may be completed in these formats provided the content meets general criteria.
Specific credit calculations apply for certain activity types:
- Academic coursework: 1 semester hour = 15 CE hours; 1 trimester hour = 12 CE hours; 1 quarter hour = 10 CE hours (official transcripts required)
- Presenting professional programs: 2 CE hours per hour of presentation
- Supervising PT/PTA students in accredited programs: 4 CE hours per year
- ABPTS Board Certification or recertification: 16 CE hours in the year received
- Authoring research or publications in recognized professional publications: 5 CE hours per page
Recommended but not exclusively required CE sources include APTA and its sections and chapters, CAPTE, the National Athletic Trainers Association, and accredited colleges and universities. Any activity germane to the PT profession that meets general criteria qualifies.
How to Renew
- Complete 32 CE hours during your biennial renewal period. Ensure each activity is germane to PT practice and provides a certificate of completion or official transcript.
- Maintain CE documentation — secure authorized signatures or verification from course instructors, providers, or sponsoring institutions. Retain all documentation for at least two years in case of a Board audit.
- Report any name or address changes to DOPL within 14 days of the change.
- Log in to the DOPL Online Renewal System at dopl.idaho.gov before your birthday expiration date.
- Attest to CE completion during the online renewal process. Do not submit a renewal indicating CE completion if you have not met the requirement — this is grounds for disciplinary action.
- Pay the $50 biennial renewal fee through the online system.
- If selected for a CE audit, provide documentation to the Board upon request.
Reinstatement of Lapsed Licenses
Under IDAPA 24.13.01 §100.02.b, licenses canceled for failure to renew may be reinstated in accordance with Idaho Code §67-2614, with the following CE requirements based on lapse duration:
- Expired 3 years or less: 16 hours of CE required for reinstatement, plus the $35 reinstatement fee and renewal fees. (IDAPA 24.13.01 §100.02.b.i)
- Expired more than 3 years: 32 hours of CE required for reinstatement, plus the $35 reinstatement fee and renewal fees. (IDAPA 24.13.01 §100.02.b.ii)
The reinstatement fee under Idaho Code §67-2614 cannot be waived regardless of circumstances. Under §67-2614(9), reinstatement is available within five years of expiration. Under §67-2614(10)(a), when a license has been canceled for more than five years, a new application for licensure is required — reinstatement is no longer available. PT Compact — Not Applicable
Idaho is not a member of the PT Compact. The Board has elected to defer membership, and Idaho does not issue or accept compact privileges as of July 2026. All renewal obligations apply to the Idaho license itself — there are no compact renewal implications for Idaho-licensed PTs.
Practical Notes: The biennial transition (effective October 14, 2025) means some licensees may still be in the former annual renewal cycle depending on when their license was issued or last renewed. If you’re uncertain which cycle applies to your license, contact DOPL directly at (208) 334-3233 or 208-577-2627 to confirm your specific renewal date and CE period. Idaho’s birthday-based expiration also means your renewal date is personal — it’s easy to miss without a calendar reminder, especially when transitioning between annual and biennial cycles.
Editorial note: The $35 reinstatement fee under Idaho Code §67-2614 cannot be waived — DOPL’s renewal page and the statute both state this explicitly. Birthday-based expiration is confirmed at the statute level: Idaho Code §67-2614(2) requires all natural persons to renew on or before their birthday. The 5-year reapplication threshold is also confirmed at the statute level: §67-2614(9) permits reinstatement within 5 years of expiration; §67-2614(10)(a) requires a new application after more than 5 years. Online-only renewal is confirmed: the DOPL renewal page explicitly directs all renewals through the Online Renewal System.
