North Carolina Physical Therapist Licenses renew annually — every January 31. The renewal window runs from November 1 through January 31. The Board notifies licensees before the renewal window opens; check that your address and email on file with NCBPTE are current. All licenses not renewed by January 31 at 5:00 PM EST lapse automatically on February 1 — the Board confirms on its homepage that “Renewals end at 5 pm January 31.” Practice is prohibited on a lapsed license.

North Carolina’s renewal structure is genuinely different from most states because it separates annual license renewal from continuing competence (CC) requirements. Every PT renews their license and pays $120 every January 31 — but the CC documentation is submitted only in the year when the PT’s 25-month reporting period ends. A PT might renew their license every year for two years without submitting CC points, then submit all 30 points in the third year when the reporting period closes.

What Makes North Carolina Different for Renewal

  • Annual renewal, but CC on a 25-month cycle. Every NC PT license expires January 31. The $120 renewal fee is due every year. But continuing competence points are accumulated and reported on a 25-month cycle — not every renewal year. Your specific reporting period begins January 1 after your initial licensure date. In CC years, you must have 30 points logged and the Jurisprudence Exercise completed before January 31.
  • Jurisprudence Exercise required every 25-month period. Each reporting period requires at least 1 point from the Board’s online Jurisprudence Exercise — covering the NC PT Practice Act, Board rules, and Position Statements. This point counts toward the 30-point total. The Jurisprudence Exercise points cannot be carried forward to the next reporting period.
  • Up to 10 points carry forward — with exceptions. Per 21 NCAC 48G .0106(c), up to 10 extra points earned in one reporting period may carry forward to the next. However, points earned in the Jurisprudence Exercise, Clinical Practice, and Self-Assessment categories cannot carry forward.
  • No grace period after January 31. Licenses lapse automatically on February 1. There is no window to practice while submitting a late renewal — the license is immediately lapsed and revival is required before practice resumes.
  • Revival requirements escalate with time lapsed. Lapsed less than one year: $150 combined fee and payment only. Lapsed 1–5 years: revival application plus 30 CC points. Lapsed more than 5 years: re-examination or endorsement pathway if active license in another state exists.
  • CC is broader than traditional CE hours. North Carolina’s continuing competence system awards points for a wide range of activities beyond traditional CE courses — including clinical practice, teaching, publishing, residency/fellowship participation, study groups, and board service — each with specific point caps per reporting period.

North Carolina Continuing Competence Requirements

Per 21 NCAC 48G .0106, licensed physical therapists must accumulate 30 continuing competence points during each 25-month reporting period. The reporting period begins January 1 following initial licensure. One point equals one contact hour (50–60 minutes). CC points must be documented on the Board’s online system. It is the licensee’s responsibility to know their assigned reporting period.

Mandatory: Jurisprudence Exercise

All PT licensees must complete the Board’s online Jurisprudence Exercise once per 25-month reporting period. This earns 1 point toward the 30-point total. The exercise covers the NC Physical Therapy Practice Act, Board rules, and Position Statements. There is no fee. Jurisprudence Exercise points cannot be carried forward to the next reporting period.

CC activity categories and point caps (per 21 NCAC 48G .0109)

The following category limits apply per reporting period:

  • Live/real-time courses from approved providers: 1 point per contact hour, maximum 29 points
  • Interactive electronic courses (live online with real-time interaction): maximum 15 points
  • Non-interactive electronic media (webcast, DVD, satellite, etc.): 1 point per hour, maximum 10 points
  • Study groups (minimum 3 licensees, live or real-time electronic): 2 hours = 1 point, maximum 10 points
  • Unassessed activities (no credit awarded by provider): 2 contact hours = 1 point, maximum 5 points
  • Self-designed home study: 3 hours = 1 point, maximum 5 points
  • Post-baccalaureate academic courses related to PT: 1 semester hour = 15 points, maximum 29 points
  • APTA credentialed residency/fellowship CE: 1 point per contact hour, maximum 29 points
  • APTA publication-based tests/quizzes: maximum 5 points

Carry-forward rule

Per 21 NCAC 48G .0106(c), up to 10 extra points earned in one reporting period may carry forward to the next period. Points from the Jurisprudence Exercise, Clinical Practice, and Self-Assessment categories may not carry forward.

Approved providers

Approved providers include any U.S. or Canadian PT licensing board, APTA and its sections and components, state APTA chapters, FSBPT, IACET, organizations approved or accredited by those entities, CAPTE-accredited PT programs, and NC Department of Public Instruction/NC Division of Public Health/NC AHEC programs directly related to PT. Activities from non-approved providers require individual Board approval — licensees pay $25 per activity approval request; non-approved sponsors pay $150.

How to Renew Your North Carolina Physical Therapist License

  1. Check your assigned CC reporting period through your login on the NCBPTE online system — know whether your reporting period ends this January 31
  2. If this is a CC year: complete 30 CC points including the mandatory Jurisprudence Exercise, and log all activities in the Board’s online CC reporting system before January 31
  3. Access the NCBPTE renewal portal at ncptboard.org during the November 1 – January 31 renewal window
  4. Complete the online renewal application
  5. Pay the $120 renewal fee by credit card
  6. Submit before January 31 at 5:00 PM EST — the Board confirms on its website that “Renewals end at 5 pm January 31.” Do not wait until the final hours.

Licenses not renewed by the January 31 deadline lapse on February 1. Practice on a lapsed license is prohibited. Contact NCBPTE at (919) 490-6393 or PTBoard@ncptboard.org for revival procedures if your license has lapsed.

PT Compact and North Carolina Renewal

North Carolina is an active PT Compact member. For PTs whose home state is North Carolina: your NC license serves as your home-state license for compact privileges in other member states. All NC compact privileges are tied to your NC license expiration — renew your NC license by January 31 first, then renew compact privileges at ptcompact.org.

For travel PTs holding a compact privilege to practice in North Carolina (home state elsewhere): your compact privilege expires when your home-state license expires. Renew your home-state license first. Per the NCBPTE Compact Privilege page: “Renewal of the NC Compact Privilege requires completion of jurisprudence exercise 1; additional continuing competence/education units are not required.” The Jurisprudence Exercise must be completed within 30 days of compact privilege renewal. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action — the Board has issued warnings to compact privilege holders specifically for this.

Practical Notes for North Carolina PT License Renewal

From the field: These notes reflect practical considerations beyond the official requirements.
  • Know your CC reporting period — it is not every year. The most common confusion among NC licensees is the difference between the annual January 31 renewal deadline and the 25-month CC reporting cycle. You pay $120 every January. You submit CC points only when your 25-month period ends. Log in to the Board’s online system to confirm your specific reporting period dates.
  • The renewal portal closes at 5:00 PM EST on January 31 — confirmed. The NCBPTE website homepage states “Renewals end at 5 pm January 31.” This is not midnight — submit well before end of business day.
  • Keep CC documentation in case of audit. North Carolina’s CC program is subject to Board audit. Retain certificates of attendance, transcripts, and other documentation supporting your CC activities. The Board can request evidence of compliance at any time.
  • Complete the Jurisprudence Exercise before January 31 in CC years. The Jurisprudence Exercise earns 1 point toward your 30-point total and must be completed each reporting period. Its points cannot carry forward. Don’t leave it until the last week of January in a CC year.
  • Plan CC points across the full 25 months, not just the renewal month. North Carolina’s CC system rewards ongoing professional development rather than a year-end CE sprint. Points from clinical practice, publishing, study groups, and board service all count — not just formal CE courses.
  • Travel PTs with NC compact privileges: Jurisprudence Exercise required at renewal. Unlike some compact states where privileges renew without additional state requirements, NC requires the Jurisprudence Exercise within 30 days of each compact privilege renewal. Build this into your renewal planning for NC assignments.
  • February 1 lapse is immediate and absolute. There is no grace period in North Carolina. If your license lapses, you must complete a revival process before practicing — which requires at minimum a $150 combined fee and can involve additional CC documentation or re-examination depending on how long the license has been lapsed.
