Washington OT licenses expire on the practitioner’s birthday every two years. Renewal requires completing 24 hours of continuing competency in the preceding two-year period (from birth date to birth date), paying the $157 renewal fee, and meeting mandatory CE topic requirements including suicide assessment and health equity training. Renewal is processed online through the HELMS portal.
Washington’s $157 renewal fee includes a $32 surcharge for the HEALWA website — the University of Washington’s online healthcare resources library that state law requires licensed professionals to fund. All fees are non-refundable per WAC 246-12-340.
There is no formal grace period after the birthday expiration date. If you renew after your birthday, a $65 late penalty fee applies in addition to the $157 renewal fee. Washington DOH notes that with over 3,000 licensed OT practitioners in the state, the board cannot provide expedited verification or fax copies of licenses for those who renew late — plan ahead.
OT Compact — Renewal Implications for Washington Licensees
Washington is an OT Compact member state (RCW 18.59.180). Washington-licensed OTs who use Washington as their home state for Compact purposes can apply for compact privileges to practice in other member states. However, renewing your Washington license does not automatically renew compact privileges — each privilege must be separately renewed through the OT Compact system.
Your compact privileges depend on maintaining an active, unencumbered Washington license. If your Washington license lapses or becomes encumbered, your compact privileges in other member states are also affected. Manage compact privilege renewal through CompactConnect and verify current processes at Washington DOH’s OT Compact page and otcompact.gov.
Continuing Education Requirements
Per WAC 246-847-065, Washington OTs must complete 24 hours of continuing competency every two years to maintain their license. All hours must be completed during the preceding two years, from birth date to birth date. CE hours cannot be carried over to the next reporting period. Review WAC 246-847-065 for current CE regulations.
Mandatory CE Topics
Within the required hours, the following are mandatory per WAC 246-847-065:
- Suicide Assessment Training: At least 3 hours within every 6-year period — must meet the requirements of chapter 246-12 WAC for approved suicide assessment training
- Health Equity Continuing Education: At least 2 hours within every 4-year period — must meet the requirements of chapter 246-12 WAC for approved health equity training
Approved CE Activity Types
The Board does not pre-approve continuing competency courses. The required hours must be obtained through two or more of the following activity types, with goals and objectives relating to OT practice as defined in RCW 18.59.020 and WAC 246-847-010:
- In-service education
- Coursework
- Conferences
- Workshops
- Peer-reviewed self-study
- Presentations
- Publications
Washington also offers an optional online jurisprudence exam that earns 0.5 CE hours. This is a separate exam from the mandatory jurisprudence exam required for initial licensure.
CE Documentation and Audit
The Board audits a percentage of all currently licensed OT practitioners. If audited, you must provide certificates of completion, course sponsors, dates of attendance, contact hours earned, a two-page synopsis for any video or book reviews, and course description/syllabus and exam scores for correspondence courses. Retain all CE documentation.
Lapsed and Expired Licenses
If you renew after your birthday, a $65 late renewal penalty fee applies. For licenses that have been expired for two or more years, an Expired License Reissuance Packet is required and the reissuance fee is $80. Reissuance after long-term expiration may require additional steps including a board-approved reentry program. Contact DOH at 360-236-4700 before attempting to reactivate a license that has been expired for an extended period.
Inactive Status
Washington offers an inactive license status for OTs not currently practicing. The inactive license fee is $47 (includes the HEALWA surcharge). When you choose to return to active practice, you must verify continuing competency and pay the current active status renewal fee. Contact DOH for current requirements for returning to active status.
How to Renew
- Confirm your license expiration date (your birthday) and plan to renew in advance
- Complete the required CE hours in the two years preceding your renewal — including mandatory suicide assessment and health equity hours
- Retain all CE documentation in case of audit
- Verify the current CE hour requirement at doh.wa.gov before renewing
- Log in to HELMS through Secure Access Washington at doh.wa.gov/helms and complete the online renewal
- Pay the $157 renewal fee by credit card, debit card, or ACH/electronic check
- Your license expires on your birthday — no grace period. A $65 late penalty applies immediately after your birthday expiration date. The renewal notice is a courtesy only — you must renew on time with or without a notice.
- CE requirement is 24 hours per WAC 246-847-065. The regulation is the authoritative source — confirmed directly from the Washington State Legislature website. The DOH licensing information page referenced 30 hours, but the WAC controls.
- CE hours must span two or more activity types. Washington requires that CE be obtained from at least two different activity categories (e.g., not all coursework or all conferences). Plan your CE accordingly.
- Hours cannot be carried over. CE hours earned outside the two-year renewal period cannot be applied to the next cycle. Plan your CE completion before your birthday deadline.
- Compact privileges renew separately. Renewing your Washington license does not renew compact privileges in other states. If you use Washington as your Compact home state, renew privileges through CompactConnect.
- The $157 fee includes a HEALWA surcharge. The $32 HEALWA surcharge is built into the renewal fee — not a separate charge. This funds the UW healthcare resources library per RCW 43.70.110.
