Oregon OT licenses expire on May 31 of even-numbered years — a fixed date that applies to all Oregon OT licensees simultaneously. The most recent expiration was May 31, 2026, and the 2026 renewal window has closed. The next renewal cycle will open in 2028 for licenses active through May 31, 2028. All renewals are completed online through the OTLB License Portal using a credit card.
Oregon licensees may satisfy continuing education requirements either through current NBCOT certification or by documenting qualifying continuing education. If NBCOT certification is current at the time of renewal, the 30-point CE requirement is automatically met. Licensees choosing the CE path must upload all completion certificates to the License Portal and must always complete the two legislatively required CE modules regardless of NBCOT status.
Oregon has no inactive license status. If you stop practicing but want to maintain licensure, you must renew on the standard schedule. If your license lapses, you may reinstate within the available window — but if you are unlicensed in any state for over 3 years, Oregon requires either a Board-approved re-entry program or retaking the NBCOT exam before you can be re-licensed.
Oregon OT Continuing Education Requirements
Option 1 — Current NBCOT Certification
If your NBCOT certification is current at the time of renewal, you automatically meet Oregon’s 30-point CE requirement per OAR 339-020-0010 and are not required to upload 30 points of CE. You still must complete both mandatory CE topics (cultural competency and pain management). To check your certification status, visit nbcot.org.
Option 2 — 30 CE Points
If your NBCOT certification is not current, you must document 30 CE points completed within the last two years. Licensees must upload 30 points of CE certificates and explain how each CE course relates to their practice when submitting the renewal. The Board does not pre-approve CE — the practitioner is responsible for determining that courses are at practice level and relevant to OT practice. AOTA/NBCOT approved courses automatically count without additional documentation of relevance.
Mandatory CE Topics (All Licensees)
Regardless of NBCOT status, all Oregon OT licensees must complete two legislatively required CE activities at each renewal:
- Cultural Competency — 1 hour (OAR 339-020-0025): Licensees choose their own cultural competency course. The Board maintains a list of available courses on the Cultural Competency CE Requirement page, but licensees are not required to choose from that list.
- OHA Pain Management Module — free, approximately 1 hour (OAR 339-020-0015): Complete the free Oregon OHA Pain Commission module at Oregon OHA Pain Management.
Completion certificates for both mandatory modules must be uploaded into the License Portal at the time of renewal.
How to Renew Your Oregon OT License
Renewals open March 2 and close May 31 of each renewal year. To renew:
- Log into the OTLB License Portal using the email address the Board has on file. If you have multiple email addresses, try all of them before contacting the Board.
- Complete the renewal application online.
- If NBCOT-certified: confirm current certification status.
- If not NBCOT-certified: upload 30 CE completion certificates with explanations of relevance to your practice.
- Upload your Cultural Competency CE completion certificate.
- Upload your OHA Pain Management Module completion certificate.
- Pay the $240 renewal fee by credit card.
Your renewed license will be available to print from the License Portal once Board staff approves the renewal — you will receive an email notification. Licenses are no longer mailed. A renewed license is valid through May 31, 2028.
Lapsed License — Reinstatement
Oregon licenses that lapsed on June 1, 2026 may be reinstated through the Reinstatement of Lapsed License page. Current reinstatement fees depend on the period of lapse:
- June 1, 2026 – Feb. 28, 2027: $290 (two-year fee $240 + $50 late fee) — license will be valid through May 31, 2028
- March 1, 2027 – Feb. 29, 2028: $170 (one-year fee $120 + $50 late fee) — license will be valid through May 31, 2028
Reinstatement also requires completing the mandatory CE (or maintaining NBCOT certification), completing the cultural competency and pain management modules, and uploading all certificates.
Three-Year Lapse and Re-Entry
If you have been unlicensed in any state for over 3 years, you must complete a Board-approved re-entry program or retake the NBCOT exam before you can be re-licensed in Oregon per ORS 675.240(5) and OAR 339-010-0016(2). This rule applies regardless of whether the lapse was in Oregon or in any other state. The Board notes that licensees planning to stop working should keep this 3-year threshold in mind when deciding whether to maintain their license. Visit the Re-Entry Into Practice page for more information.
OT Compact and Oregon
Oregon is not an OT Compact member state. There are no compact renewal implications for Oregon-licensed OTs, and OTs from other compact member states cannot use compact privileges to practice in Oregon. For updates on Oregon’s compact status, visit the OTLB OT Licensure Compact Information page.
- 2026 renewal window is closed. If your license lapsed May 31, 2026, you must reinstate — not renew. The next standard renewal window opens in 2028.
- NBCOT currency waives the 30-point CE requirement. But it does not waive the mandatory cultural competency and pain management modules — those are required for everyone.
- No inactive license option. Oregon has no inactive status — you are either licensed or you are not. There is no way to pause a license without it lapsing.
- Use a personal email address. The Board strongly recommends using a personal email address for your portal account, as employment or school email changes can lock you out of the portal.
- 3-year rule is across all states. If you have been unlicensed in any state — not just Oregon — for over 3 years, you must complete a re-entry program or retake NBCOT before Oregon will re-license you.
- Retain your CE records. The Board may audit CE records — keep all completion certificates; the Board’s student/new graduate guidance advises retaining them for 4 years.

Oregon requires 30 CE points within the last two years — unless your NBCOT certification is current, in which case you automatically meet the 30-point requirement. Regardless of NBCOT status, all licensees must also complete the 1-hour Cultural Competency CE and the free OHA Pain Management Module and upload completion certificates to the License Portal. What happens if I let my Oregon OT license lapse?
If your license lapses, you must reinstate rather than renew. Reinstatement fees and the license period covered depend on when you apply. If you have been unlicensed in any state for over 3 years — not just Oregon — you must complete a Board-approved re-entry program or retake the NBCOT exam before Oregon will re-license you per ORS 675.240(5). The Board advises licensees to keep this 3-year threshold in mind before allowing a multi-year lapse. Source: Oregon OTLB Reinstatement of Lapsed License page
Does Oregon have an inactive license status?
No. Oregon does not have an inactive license option. OTs are either licensed or not licensed. If you plan to stop practicing for a period, you must still renew your license on the standard cycle or face lapse and reinstatement fees. Source: Oregon OTLB License Renewals page — FAQ section
