Indiana OT licenses renew biennially and expire on December 31 of even-numbered years — a fixed calendar date that applies to all Indiana OTs regardless of when they were originally licensed. Renewal notices are sent approximately 90 days before expiration to the email or mailing address on file, but it is the licensee’s responsibility to renew on time whether or not a notice is received.
Renewal can be completed online through MyLicense.IN.gov or by mailing the paper renewal form with a check or money order. The online system processes payments immediately; mailed renewals should allow approximately 4 weeks for processing per the official renewal form instructions. If a renewal is postmarked after the December 31 expiration date, a $50 late fee is required in addition to the $100 renewal fee.
Indiana requires 18 hours of continuing competency for each biennial renewal period. There are no mandatory topic requirements, but the 18 hours must be structured with at least 9 hours from Category I activities and no more than 9 hours from Category II activities. All 18 hours may be completed through distance learning if the provider is approved.
Indiana OT Continuing Competency Requirements
Hours Required and Proration
Indiana uses a prorated continuing competency structure based on how long the license has been active:
- License valid less than 12 months: 0 continuing competency hours required
- License valid 12–24 months: 9 continuing competency hours required
- License valid the full 24-month cycle: 18 continuing competency hours required
Continuing competency hours must be earned during the biennial renewal period. Hours cannot be carried over from one renewal period to the next.
Category I Activities (Minimum 9 Hours)
At least 9 of the 18 required hours must come from Category I activities, which include:
- Formally organized courses, workshops, seminars, and symposia
- Home study programs, including approved online, web-based, audio, and video instructional programs
- Undergraduate or graduate courses from an accredited institution related to the management, practice, and education of occupational therapy
Each Category I activity must be at least 1 contact hour in length.
Category II Activities (Maximum 9 Hours)
No more than 9 hours may come from Category II activities. Category II activities include:
- Publications of books, articles, or films related to OT practice, management, or education — maximum 5 contact hours
- Preparation for teaching an OT course in an accredited program — maximum 6 contact hours
- Fieldwork supervision — 1 contact hour awarded per 32 hours of Level I or Level II student supervision, maximum 6 contact hours
- In-house or in-service seminars specifically designed for training or teaching
- Actively participating in professional organizations as an officer or committee chairperson
- Supervising OT students during observational hours as pre-OT applicants
- Research activities other than publications and presentations
Approved Providers
CE programs must be approved by the Indiana Occupational Therapy Committee or sponsored by one of the following organizations:
- American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or AOTA-approved providers
- National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
- Indiana Occupational Therapy Association (IOTA) or IOTA-approved providers
Accredited college courses qualify if the content is directly related to OT practice. The conversion rate is 1 semester hour = 15 contact hours; 1 quarter hour = 10 contact hours.
Distance Learning
All 18 continuing competency hours may be obtained through distance learning methods, provided the program is from an approved provider. There is no separate cap on online or distance learning hours — the requirement is only that the provider is approved.
Audit and Documentation
Licensees must certify completion of continuing competency at the time of renewal. You do not submit continuing competency documentation with your renewal — the Committee conducts random audits per IC 25-1-4, and selected licensees are contacted separately. Continuing competency documentation must be retained for 3 years after the last renewal date and presented to the Committee on request. Do not renew your license until you have met the full continuing competency requirement.
How to Renew Your Indiana OT License
Online: Log into MyLicense.IN.gov, locate your license on your dashboard, and complete the renewal. Pay the $100 renewal fee by credit or debit card. Certify completion of your continuing competency requirements.
By Mail: Download the OT/OTA Renewal Form PDF, complete it, and mail it with a check or money order payable to “Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.” Allow approximately 4 weeks for processing. If mailed after December 31, include the $50 late fee.
At renewal you must also answer disciplinary questions and swear under penalty of perjury to U.S. citizenship per IC 12-32-15 (or submit documentation of qualified alien status or federal work authorization from USCIS if you are not a U.S. citizen).
Lapsed License — Late Renewal and Reinstatement
If your Indiana OT license expires on December 31 and you have not renewed, the license is immediately invalid and you may not practice. A $50 late fee is required if you renew after the expiration date.
If your license has been expired for three or more years, you must formally reinstate through MyLicense.IN.gov. Reinstatement requires:
- Payment of $200 total ($100 renewal fee + $100 initial application fee)
- Copies of all continuing competency certificates earned since expiration
- A letter detailing your work history since the license expired
- Verification for any and all OT licenses ever held in any state
The Committee may also schedule a personal appearance and may require retaking the examination as a condition of reinstatement.
OT Compact and Indiana License Renewal
Indiana is an OT Compact member state per Indiana Code §25-43, with compact privileges live as of March 9, 2026. For Indiana-licensed OTs who hold compact privileges in other member states, maintaining an active, unencumbered Indiana license is essential — allowing your Indiana home state license to lapse will affect your compact privileges in other states.
For OTs practicing in Indiana under compact privileges from another home state, your renewal obligations are governed by your home state. Your home state license must remain active and in good standing to maintain compact privileges. Indiana’s compact page notes that compact-related rulemaking and updates will be provided as they become available — visit otcompact.gov or contact the Indiana PLA at pla14@pla.in.gov for current compact procedures.
- Fixed expiration date: December 31 of even years. All Indiana OTs renew on the same date — there is no birthday-based or rolling expiration. Mark your calendar well in advance.
- No grace period. Your license is invalid on January 1 if not renewed. A $50 late fee applies if you renew after December 31 but before the 3-year reinstatement threshold.
- Do not renew until continuing competency is complete. The PLA’s licensing page states this explicitly: “IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED YOUR CC – do not renew your license until you have met the requirements.”
- Keep continuing competency records for 3 years. You do not submit continuing competency documentation with your renewal, but you must retain it for 3 years and produce it if selected for a random audit.
- Reciprocity licensees: outstanding state verifications due at renewal. If you obtained your Indiana license by reciprocity and did not submit all state verifications at the time of initial licensure, all remaining verifications must be on file by your first renewal or your renewal will be incomplete.
