North Carolina OT licenses renew annually and expire on June 30 of each year — the same date for all North Carolina OT and OTA licensees. The renewal window opens April 1 and closes June 30. The renewal fee is $50. All renewals are completed online through the NCBOT website; paper renewals are only permitted in two specific situations: renewing for more than one license period at once, or renewing with pending disciplinary action.
North Carolina uses a Continuing Competence Activity (CCA) point system rather than simple CE hours. Licensees must accumulate 15 CCA points per annual renewal period. At least 1 of those points must be categorized as Ethics — this category must be specifically entered as “Ethics” in the online renewal system for the requirement to register. Documentation proving completion of all CCA activities must be uploaded during the online renewal process.
First-time renewees are generally exempt from the CCA requirement unless specifically notified by the Board. For all subsequent renewals, 15 CCA points including 1 ethics point are required every year.
OT Compact and North Carolina License Renewal
North Carolina is a member of the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact. To maintain compact privileges in other member states, your North Carolina license must remain active and in good standing. Renewing on time each year is essential to preserving compact privilege eligibility. Compact privileges generally depend on maintaining an active license in good standing in your home state. Verify current OT Compact requirements at otcompact.gov. Monitor your compact privilege status at otcompact.gov.
Continuing Competence Activity (CCA) Requirements
What Are CCA Points?
North Carolina uses a CCA point system where different professional activities earn different point values. 15 CCA points are required per annual renewal period. The point values for different activity types are defined in Board Rule .0805 and summarized in the Qualified Activities for Maintaining Continuing Competence chart available on the NCBOT website.
Mandatory Ethics Requirement
At least 1 CCA point must be in the Ethics category every renewal period. This is non-negotiable — the online renewal system will not allow you to proceed without this requirement being met. Critically, you must categorize your ethics activity as “Ethics” in the renewal system; a general professional development course that touches on ethics will not satisfy the requirement if not categorized correctly. Category Maximums
Each CCA category has a maximum point value that can be applied toward the 15-point requirement. You may enter more points than the category maximum, but only the maximum allowable amount will count. Review the full Qualified Activities chart before planning your CCA activities to ensure your hours count. Source: NCBOT Continuing Competence Page
Approved CCA Activity Types
North Carolina recognizes a broad range of qualifying activities per Rule .0805, including academic courses, live presentations, electronic/web-based courses, AOTA self-paced courses, mentorship, board or committee work, professional writing, research and grant activities, and small group study. Each activity type has specific documentation requirements and point caps.
Documentation Requirements
You must upload proof-of-completion documentation for all CCA activities during the online renewal process. Documentation must be in PDF format. The NCBOT provides guidance on creating PDFs on its website. Retain copies of all CCA documentation for a minimum of 2 years following the last day of the license renewal period for which the points were earned — the Board may audit at any time. First Renewal Exemption
If this is your first renewal, you are not required to provide CCA points — unless the Board has specifically notified you that you are required to do so. Source: NCBOT Online Renewal Instructions

What Happens If Your North Carolina OT License Lapses?
North Carolina does not describe a formal grace period after June 30 expiration. The late renewal fee of $50 applies for renewals processed after June 30. Based on Board rules:
- Expired but within 24 months: You must complete CE requirements and pay all renewal fees for the period your license was not current, plus any applicable late fee ($50 late fee). You must renew and be current before resuming practice.
- Expired more than 24 months: You must make a full new application for licensure and meet all requirements then existing — renewal is not available. Contact NCBOT at 919-832-1380 or administrator@ncbot.org. Source: NCBOT FAQ
- Multiple renewal periods: If renewing for more than one period at once, you must use the mail renewal process — online renewal is not available for multi-period renewals.

Practical Notes
- The renewal window is only 3 months — April 1 to June 30. Unlike many states that offer rolling renewal windows, North Carolina compresses everyone into the same April-June window. Track your CCA points throughout the year and upload documentation as you go rather than scrambling in April.
- Ethics must be categorized correctly. The system will not credit your ethics CCA unless you specifically select the “Ethics” category. A course on ethics that you categorize under “General Professional Development” will not satisfy the mandatory ethics requirement.
- Documentation must be uploaded in PDF format. The Board requires PDF proof-of-completion for each CCA activity during renewal. Prepare PDFs of your certificates before beginning the renewal process. The Board provides PDF conversion guidance on its website.
- Print your acknowledgement page immediately. After completing payment, you are directed to the acknowledgement page which contains your License Renewal Card. Print this page before navigating away — it serves as your proof of renewal and your renewal card.
- Annual renewal means June 30 every year. Unlike biennial states, North Carolina OTs renew every year. Set a calendar reminder for April 1 when the window opens.
- There is no inactive license status. North Carolina has no inactive or inactive-exempt option. Your license is either current or expired. If you stop practicing, your license will lapse — and you will still owe CE requirements and renewal fees for any lapsed periods within 24 months. After 24 months, you must re-apply for licensure entirely. Source: NCBOT FAQ
- Compact privileges require an active NC license. If your NC license lapses, your compact privileges in other states are affected. Renew on time to protect your ability to practice in other compact states.
- OTAs must list a supervisor to complete renewal. OTA licensees cannot complete the renewal process without entering a supervisor’s license number. If you are an unemployed OTA, type “unemployed” in the supervisor field.
