Michigan OT licenses renew on a 2-year cycle tied to a fixed profession-wide calendar date. Renewal requires completing 20 clock-hours of board-approved continuing education during the two years preceding the renewal application, including mandatory hours in pain and symptom management and implicit bias training, plus a one-time human trafficking training requirement. The renewal fee is $165.40, paid through MiPLUS.
Michigan does not require you to submit proof of CE hours with your renewal application — instead, you certify via attestation that you have met all requirements. However, you must retain documentation for four years from the date of renewal in case of audit. Michigan has partnered with CE Broker to help licensees track CE, though use of CE Broker is optional.
Michigan has a 60-day renewal window after license expiration during which renewal is available with a $20 late fee. After 60 days, the license is considered lapsed and relicensure is required. Licenses lapsed for three or more years carry tiered supervised practice hour requirements. Verify with LARA whether practice is permitted during the 60-day grace period before relying on it.
OT Compact — Michigan Status
Michigan is not yet a member of the OT Compact as of June 2026. OT Compact legislation (HB 4103/4104) is awaiting Senate approval. Until enacted and effective, there are no compact renewal implications for Michigan licensees — every OT must maintain a full individual Michigan license. Monitor the legislative status at legislature.mi.gov.
Continuing Education Requirements
Per Administrative Rule R 338.1251, Michigan OTs must complete 20 clock-hours of board-approved continuing education during the two years preceding the renewal application. A minimum of 1 hour must be earned in pain and symptom management. The Board approves CE pursuant to R 338.1252 — AOTA-approved programming and MiOTA offerings are widely accepted.
Mandatory CE Topics
Within the 20-hour requirement, the following are mandatory as of the January 2026 licensing guide:
- Pain and Symptom Management: At least 1 clock-hour must be earned in this area
- Implicit Bias Training: 1 hour per year of the renewal cycle — 2 hours total for a standard 2-year renewal. This is not a one-time requirement and must be completed each renewal cycle prior to renewal
- Human Trafficking Training: A one-time training requirement per Administrative Rule 338.1215. If completed during initial licensure or a previous renewal cycle, it does not need to be repeated — you certify completion via the renewal attestation
CE Documentation and Audit
Michigan does not require CE documentation to be submitted with your renewal application. By accepting the renewal attestation in MiPLUS, you certify that you have met the human trafficking, implicit bias, and CE requirements. However, you must retain documentation for four years from the date of applying for renewal. If selected for audit, you are required to provide copies confirming completion of all CE requirements.
Lapsed License — Relicensure Requirements
If your Michigan OT license has been lapsed for three or more years, relicensure requires supervised practice experience in addition to standard CE and fee requirements. The required hours scale with the duration of lapse:
| Duration of Lapse | Supervised Practice Hours Required |
|---|---|
| Less than 3 years | Standard relicensure requirements; no additional supervised hours; no new background check required |
| 3 years to less than 7 years | Not less than 200 hours of supervised practice experience per R 338.1228 |
| 7 years to 15 years | Not less than 400 hours of supervised practice experience per R 338.1228 |
| More than 15 years | Not less than 600 hours of supervised practice experience per R 338.1228 |
Applicants needing to complete supervised practice hours may request a limited license — valid for one year and renewable once — by submitting a written request at the time of the relicensure application. A Work Experience Application form is available on the LARA OT page. Contact LARA directly before attempting relicensure if your license has been lapsed for three or more years.
How to Renew

- Download the current LARA licensing guide to confirm no CE requirements have changed since this page was last verified
- Complete 20 clock-hours of board-approved CE during the 2 years preceding your renewal date, including all mandatory topics
- Retain all CE documentation for four years from your renewal date
- Log in to MiPLUS no sooner than 90 days before your expiration date and complete the online renewal application
- Answer Good Moral Character and disciplinary disclosure questions
- Accept the renewal attestation, certifying you have met all CE, human trafficking, and implicit bias training requirements
- Pay the $165.40 renewal fee by credit or debit card (Visa, MC, Amex, or Discover)
- Renew online no sooner than 90 days before expiration. MiPLUS is configured to accept renewals starting at the 90-day window — you cannot submit early beyond this point.
- A 60-day late renewal window exists after expiration. Renewal with a $20 late fee is available during this period. Verify with LARA whether you may continue practicing during these 60 days before relying on this window.
- Implicit bias training is per year, not per cycle. Complete 1 hour in year one and 1 hour in year two of your renewal cycle — not 2 hours all at once at renewal time.
- Human trafficking training is one-time only. If completed during initial licensure or a prior renewal, you only certify completion on your renewal attestation — you do not repeat the training.
- Retain CE documentation for 4 years. You do not submit proof with your renewal, but the Board audits CE compliance. Keep certificates and documentation organized.
- Lapsed more than 3 years? Supervised hours required. Contact LARA and review the Work Experience Application before attempting relicensure if your license has been lapsed for 3 or more years.
- Rules are under active revision. CE requirements may change. Always verify against the current LARA licensing guide before renewing.
