Arizona Physical Therapist Licenses renew biennially, with all licenses expiring August 31 of every even-numbered year. The compliance period runs September 1 of one even year through August 31 of the next even year (for example, September 1, 2024 through August 31, 2026). Every Arizona-licensed PT is on the same renewal cycle — the expiration date is statewide and fixed, not individual.
Arizona’s continuing competence system is category-based rather than prescriptive. There are no mandatory CE topics — no required ethics hours, no jurisprudence renewal requirement, no state-mandated subject areas. Instead, PTs must earn 20 contact hours from Board-defined activity categories, with at least 10 from Category A. Licensees attest to completion at renewal but do not submit documentation unless selected for audit.
What Makes Arizona Different for Renewal
- AZLAW required at every compact privilege renewal. Arizona is one of the few compact states that requires the AZLAW jurisprudence examination before every compact privilege renewal — not just at initial issuance. This is confirmed by the Board’s Substantive Policy Statement. Travel PTs on Arizona compact privileges must build AZLAW retesting into each renewal cycle.
- No mandatory CE topics. Unlike states that require specific ethics, jurisprudence, implicit bias, or other mandatory CE hours, Arizona imposes no mandatory topic requirements. All 20 hours are elective within the Category A/B/C framework.
- Category-based CE with no pre-approved provider list. The Arizona Board does not pre-approve specific CE activities or maintain a published approved-provider directory. Licensees select activities meeting the Category A/B/C definitions and attest to compliance at renewal.
- No grace period — administrative suspension on August 31. Failure to renew by August 31 results in immediate administrative suspension. There is no window to practice on an expired license while submitting a late renewal. Reinstatement requires paying the $100 reinstatement fee plus the renewal fee and, for previously licensed PTs whose license lapsed, submitting CE documentation from the lapse period.
- CE documentation retained two compliance periods. Per A.A.C. R4-24-401(I), licensees must retain evidence of CE participation for two compliance periods after the activity — roughly four years. Do not discard CE records after renewal.
- Audit by certified mail within 60 days. Audits are random. The Board sends notice by certified mail within 60 days of the renewal deadline. Audited licensees must submit evidence within 30 days of receipt of the audit notice.
Arizona PT Continuing Competence Requirements
Per A.A.C. R4-24-401, licensed physical therapists must complete 20 contact hours of continuing competence activities during each biennial compliance period. One contact hour equals 60 minutes of instruction. Licensees attest to completion on the renewal application — documentation is not submitted unless the licensee is selected for audit.
Category A
Category A includes activities approved by: (1) accredited medical, physical therapy, or health care education programs; (2) national or state medical, PT, or health care associations or their components; or (3) national medical, PT, or health care specialty societies. Specific qualifying activity types include continuing education courses, PT clinical specialty certification coursework, PT clinical residency coursework, and post-graduate PT education from an accredited college or university.
At least 10 of the 20 required hours must come from Category A. No more than 5 of those 10 Category A hours may be from non-clinical coursework (such as practice management, ethics, administration, law, or reimbursement).
Categories B and C
Categories B and C include activities that have not been approved for contact hours by Category A organizations but are related to PT practice. Category B includes study groups, presentations, publications, and other professional activities. Category C includes additional specified activities.
No more than 10 hours combined from Categories B and C may count toward the 20-hour total. No more than 5 of those B+C hours may be from non-clinical coursework.
Excluded activities
The following activities do not qualify for continuing competence credit: staff meetings, presentations or publications directed at lay groups, routine teaching as part of a job requirement, and regularly scheduled institutional activities such as rounds or case conferences.
Prorated CE for new licensees
PTs licensed during the second year of a compliance period (between September 1 of an odd year and August 31 of the next even year) have a prorated CE requirement: 10 contact hours, all from Category A.
CE record retention and audit
Per A.A.C. R4-24-401(I), licensees must retain evidence of CE participation for two compliance periods after the activity — approximately four years. Audits are conducted randomly after the close of the renewal period. Audit notice is sent by certified mail within 60 calendar days of the renewal deadline. Audited licensees must submit evidence to the Board within 30 days of receiving the audit notice.
How to Renew Your Arizona Physical Therapist License
- Complete 20 contact hours of qualifying CE during the compliance period (September 1 through August 31 of the renewal year), ensuring at least 10 hours are Category A
- Log in to the Arizona Board licensee portal at ptboard.az.gov/renewals before the August 31 deadline
- Complete the online renewal application, attest to CE completion, and answer any required disclosure questions
- Pay the $160 renewal fee through the online portal
- Submit before August 31 — no grace period applies
- Retain all CE documentation for two compliance periods after participation in case of audit
If your license has been administratively suspended for non-renewal, contact the Arizona Board at (602) 274-0236 for reinstatement procedures. Reinstatement requires the $100 reinstatement fee plus the applicable renewal fee, plus CE documentation for the lapse period if you were previously licensed in Arizona.
PT Compact and Arizona Renewal
Arizona is an active PT Compact member. For Arizona-licensed PTs whose home state is Arizona: your Arizona license is your home-state compact license. Renew your Arizona license by August 31, then renew compact privileges in other member states at ptcompact.org.
For travel PTs holding an Arizona Compact Privilege (home state elsewhere): your compact privilege expires when your home-state license expires. Renew your home-state license first. Per the Arizona Board’s Other Applicants page: “AZ Compact privilege purchase requires successful completion of the Arizona Jurisprudence Exam (AZLAW) with EVERY purchase (original purchase and each subsequent purchase made in conjunction with your home state license renewal).” Register for the AZLAW through fsbpt.org and schedule at a Prometric center before your compact privilege renewal date. Arizona CE requirements do not apply to compact privilege holders — CE is governed by your home state’s rules.
Practical Notes for Arizona PT License Renewal
- August 31 is the same for every Arizona PT — renew early. All Arizona PT licenses expire on the same day. The Board’s online portal handles a high volume of renewals near the deadline. Submit your renewal well before August 31 to avoid technical delays.
- No mandatory topics makes CE planning flexible. Arizona imposes no required CE subjects for renewal. If your practice-driven professional development already generates 10+ Category A hours every two years, meeting the renewal requirement may be straightforward — just ensure you’re tracking and retaining documentation.
- Verify CE activities qualify before taking them. The Board does not pre-approve activities. If you are unsure whether a specific course qualifies as Category A, contact the Board at (602) 274-0236 before taking the course rather than after.
- Keep CE records for two compliance periods — approximately four years. Per A.A.C. R4-24-401(I): “A licensee or certificate holder shall retain evidence of participation in a continuing competence activity for two compliance periods after participation.” Audit notices are sent by certified mail within 60 calendar days of the renewal deadline; audited licensees must submit evidence within 30 days of receiving the notice per R4-24-401(H).
- Travel PTs on compact privilege: AZLAW required before renewal. Arizona requires the AZLAW at every compact privilege renewal. Register through fsbpt.org, obtain testing eligibility, schedule at a Prometric center, and pass before your compact privilege renewal date.
- Previously licensed in Arizona? CE documentation required for lapse period. Per the Board’s New Applicants page: “If you were previously licensed in Arizona you are required to submit documentation of continuing competence commensurate with the time of licensure lapse.” This means CE requirements apply for each compliance cycle during the lapse, in addition to the $100 reinstatement fee and renewal fee.
