Licenses not renewed by that date become null and void on December 1, 2027. See the At-a-Glance table above for current fees, CE requirements, and deadline details.

Florida’s renewal CE structure requires 24 contact hours per biennium: 22 general hours plus 2 mandatory hours of Prevention of Medical Errors. HIV/AIDS CE (1 hour) is required for the first renewal only. All CE must be tracked through CE Broker. No more than 12 of the 24 hours may come from home study courses.

CE Requirements for Florida PT License Renewal

Florida requires 24 contact hours of continuing education per biennial renewal period. All CE must be completed through Board-approved providers and tracked through CE Broker.

CE breakdown (standard renewal):

  • 2 hours — Prevention of Medical Errors (mandatory every cycle): Required for all Florida healthcare licensees. Medical Error courses approved by any Board within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance are accepted. Maximum 3 hours of Medical Errors CE accepted per biennium.
  • 22 hours — General CE: Any approved CE content from Board-rule approved providers. No more than 12 of these hours may be from home study courses.
  • HIV/AIDS — 1 hour, first renewal only: Required only for your first license renewal. Not required in subsequent renewal cycles. HIV/AIDS courses approved by any Board within the Division of Medical Quality Assurance are accepted. Maximum 3 hours of HIV/AIDS CE accepted per biennium.

Licenses issued in the second half of the biennium:

If your license was issued in the second half of the current biennium, you are exempt from the full 24-hour CE requirement — except for 2 hours of Prevention of Medical Errors and 1 hour of HIV/AIDS (if first renewal).

Other approved methods of earning CE hours:

  • Attendance at a Florida Board of Physical Therapy meeting (does not apply if you are on the agenda or appearing for another purpose)
  • Passing the Florida Laws and Rules Examination within the biennium — counts toward CE hours (does not apply if taken for disciplinary order, initial licensure, reactivation, or reinstatement)
  • CE course instructors: up to 6 contact hours per biennium
  • APTA-credentialed clinical instructors: 1 contact hour per 120 hours of clinical internship, maximum 8 hours per biennium

Category limits:

  • Home study: maximum 12 hours per biennium
  • Risk management: maximum 5 hours per biennium
  • HIV/AIDS: maximum 3 hours per biennium
  • Prevention of Medical Errors: maximum 3 hours per biennium

Board-approved CE providers:

  • Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA) approved courses
  • American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and state APTA chapters and sections
  • CAPTE-accredited or CAPTE-status PT programs at colleges and universities (1 credit hour = 15 contact hours)

How to Renew Your Florida PT License

Renewal is available online through the MQA Services Portal or by mail.

  1. Complete your 24 CE hours before your renewal deadline — including all mandatory requirements
  2. Confirm all CE hours are reported and reflected in your CE Broker account
  3. Complete mandatory background screening or pay the $43.25 FDLE fingerprint retention fee if your fingerprint retention is expiring this cycle
  4. Log in to the Florida MQA Online Services Portal (the “Renew My License” option appears no later than 90 days before expiration)
  5. Complete the renewal application and attest to CE completion
  6. Pay the $80 renewal fee by credit card, debit card, or electronic check online — or print a summary and mail with cashier’s check or money order payable to the Florida Department of Health
  7. Submit before November 30, 2027
Important: Licenses not renewed by November 30, 2027 become null and void on December 1, 2027. Late renewal fees escalate significantly. CE Broker reporting can take time — do not complete CE in the final days before the deadline and expect it to appear immediately. Renew early.

Late Renewal and Null and Void Licenses

License Status Action Required Fee
Active — renewed on time (before Nov 30) Standard renewal $80
Late active renewal (after expiration) Late renewal — delinquency fee added $135
120-day notified delinquent Delinquent renewal $215
December 1, 2027 or later License null and void — contact Board for reinstatement guidance Verify with Board

Note: Delinquent licensees renewing late must also report CE hours for the current cycle and the previous cycle. Contact the Florida Board of Physical Therapy:

Practical Notes for Florida PT License Renewal

From the field: These notes reflect practical considerations beyond the official requirements — things that affect your renewal timeline and planning as a working PT.
  • November 30, 2027 — mark this date permanently. Every Florida PT renews at the same time. This is a fixed date not based on your birthday or initial license date. The MQA portal and CE Broker both get heavy traffic near the deadline — renew early.
  • CE Broker is mandatory — not optional. All CE hours must be submitted to CE Broker. Do not submit CE certificates directly to the Board — they will not be accepted. All hours go through CE Broker.
  • Home study cap: 12 of 24 hours maximum. No more than half your CE hours can come from home study courses. Plan your CE mix accordingly.
  • Prevention of Medical Errors is the only truly recurring mandatory topic. 2 hours every cycle, no exceptions. HIV/AIDS is first renewal only. Human Trafficking was a one-time requirement (deadline January 1, 2021) — not recurring.
  • Passing the Florida Laws and Rules Exam counts as CE. If you take the Laws and Rules exam within the biennium (and not for discipline, reactivation, or initial licensure purposes), it counts toward your CE hours for that cycle.
  • Check your fingerprint retention status. A $43.25 FDLE fingerprint retention fee is required at renewal if your fingerprint retention is expiring this cycle. If it expires within 60 days, you must pay separately through the CHAI system before renewing.
  • Delinquent renewals require CE from two cycles. If your license is delinquent when you renew, you must report CE hours for both the current cycle and the previous cycle before renewing.
  • December 1, 2027 is a hard cutoff. Licenses become null and void on December 1, 2027. A null and void license requires contacting the Board for reinstatement guidance — it is not a standard renewal.
  • Travel PTs: November 30 mid-assignment is a hard stop. Build renewal into your contract planning — CE completion, CE Broker reporting, and fingerprint retention all take time to process.
